Here is my scenario:

I utilize a Gbe NAS on my small network and a Gbe switch and needed a way to transfer large files between the NAS and my notebook without the need to be wired.  After a lot of research, I decided on the DLink family of products to provide the connection over wireless.  I have a DWA-182 C1 WLAN USB 3.0 adapter on my Samsung Chronos i7 notebook that is communicating with a DAP-1665 running as an Access Point. Both units are AC1200 products running on 5GHz band and the AP is set for 11ac communications only.  While testing file upload and download speeds with the new configuration, it became clear that the transfer speed was only marginally better than what I get using my internal wireless card which runs on the 11n standard in the 5Ghz band.  My connection is extremely stable and strong.  Thus was launched a several week long effort of troubleshooting the speed issue.

What my troubleshooting has uncovered is that the adapter only runs in the USB 2.0 mode regardless of the USB port that I use.  The notebook has 2 - USB 3.0 ports and 1 - USB 2.0 port which are all fully functional.  I am using a USB port sniffer called USBlyzer and the data that it is providing indicates that the DWA-182 is only operating at USB 2.0 speed when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.

See the image below:

When I plug in a USB 3.0 device, it reports a SuperSpeed connection.
See the image below:

After reviewing this data, I looked at the drivers for the DWA-182 that are on the DLink Website for this product.  When the driver file is opened for my machine, it shows to be a "rtwlanu.sys" system file.  When the property tab is opened, it shows that this driver set in this sys file is for USB 2.0 only.
See the image below:

I have been working with DLink tech support(s) for the last 2 weeks or so, but really haven't gotten anywhere useful yet.  I am still  waiting for level 3 support to contact me about this problem - I have been waiting since last Monday morning - it is now Thursday afternoon.  BTW - the DAP-1665 is considered a "business" product and the DWA-182 a "consumer" product - each with their own phone numbers and  support groups which makes it difficult to determine where the problem lies.......

I will update this post as new data becomes available.

Wow...  :o

Yes looking at the specs on the main web site, Rev C1 is supporting of USB 3.0 and backwards compatible with 2.0. So you should be seeing 3.0 connections with Rev C1. And our not.  :-\

The 1665 is a new product so I haven't seen it yet.

I would be curious if the DAP has HT co-existence features in it. I don't think it applies to 5ghz however maybe.

It would seem that if the AP and adapter are using 5Ghz and single mode AC, file xfer speeds should be way better then N mode.

I would set the DAP to mixed ALL mode and see if that changes anything.

I have the DWA-180 from last year and it was 3.0 native and have tested it on several D-Link router models and it's way faster than any N adapter I have on AC mode. I generally test using Mixed ALL modes for my configurations.

It would be a good test too to try a different adapter as a test on the LT.
Ensure the LTs USB drivers are up to date.

Do you have a different PC that has USB 3.0 support to test the adapter in by chance?

My thoughts about large file xfer over USB, any USB...I tend not to use this platform, especially with cruicial data or if xfers are being done constantly. Wired LAN is the most safest for data xfers and is still the fastest. USB at any rate will always be a bottle next on performance. I presume if the data and and being time efficient isn't a priority then of course, this can be a workable solution. Overall, if your data and time efficient, I'd go with LAN wired or the very least, Wire LAN cable from the LT to a AC bridge. Avoid the USB bottle neck if possible.

Let us know if any of the suggestions work...If your seeing the adapter connect to other PCs USB 3.0 supporting and it's only showing 2.0, this will need to be handled by D-Link support.

Keep us posted.

Hey Furry -
In answer to a couple of your queries -
The 1665 does have the HT 20/40 -Co-existence function and it is enabled. (not sure what this does  :-\ )
I spent about 5 hours on the phone with the 1665 tech support guys and we changed everything he could think of.  Here are some of the things we tried:
Encryption set to: WPA2-AES
Power - set to various levels - now at 100%
Channels - Set to at least 5 different places in the 5Ghz band. (Note - I run inSSIDer and there is only one other device in the area that is transmitting in the 5G band, that's visible, that is)
Moved the LT right next to the 1665.
Changed the modes from Mixed (ac,n,a) to (ac only).

Unfortunately, this is the only pc that I have that has USB 3.0 - my other two are older, and are 2.0 only, so, I'm going to see if I can get another laptop this weekend that has a 3.0 port in it and try the 182 in it.

The ASMedia extensionable host controller has had the latest drivers installed.  This pc was in the Samsung repair shop about a month ago for an issue with the Bluetooth adapter, which was replaced.  I requested that the tech verify my 3.0 ports since I knew I was going to be adding a new WLAN adapter. He said he tested them and that they were functional.

Anyway, I'll post something later when I've had a chance to test this adapter in another pc.

Turn HT20/40 Co-existence OFF if your running single mode.
