Questions on XBL sticky
« on: August 19, 2011, 11:01:59 AM »

Okay, I have my router configured to the sticky settings except I have yet to create a rule for my Xbox's.
With that being said,  once I create a rule will there be any increased performance gains online playing games Vs. how the router is configured now with no rules and no one using the internet while I am on Xbox?

Also I have power boost on my cable internet, so my upload speed is rated at 2 meg but with power boost it can get up to 4 meg.  I have ran several speedtests and every time my upload speed is ~4.5meg.  Now I am not sure how long my connection can maintain that upload speed due to the power boost, so should I change the "Automatic Uplink Speed" to manual and just enter 2 meg for upload speed?   With it set to auto my router always shows 5meg upload.

Thanks!

Once you set up rules for the gamefule, this function ensures that the traffic going between the router and the ISP modem from the consoles is managed well for all devices that are in the rule, including PCs. This does not guarantee any game improvements while gaming since there are other factors to consider like ISP service conditions and game services and other game users networking conditions. You can have everything set well well on your end of the system, however anyone of these other factors could and probably will impact your gaming experience. I still see others with bad signal bars when playing BO or MW2, sometimes I don't notice any thing, sometimes we see the lag start. And who really knows what is doing it? We all like to attribute it to the other player interference and maybe that is correct sometimes. And maybe its how they are set up and who else is online while they are gaming too? Mom and dad streaming video while the kids are gaming and there routers are not set up for any QoS. So this can effect how it's getting on the gaming services too.

The only thing we can can do is to ensure that from the ISP modem thru the router to the devices we connect to them are set up as well as we can.

I recommend setting a manual speed of 4048 range and see how that goes. Give you some over head that the router can play with and show always maintain that as long is your ISP and modem is giving it to you.

I personally set my upload to my provisioned speed (without power boost), but to be honest I haven't seen any clear data one way or another it makes a difference. Does anyone have idea what the upload gamefuel does? Like in technical terms?

Well, I found a couple of sustained up/down load speed test sites and my DL came in at 2.2meg and not 5meg that speedtest was telling me.

http://speedtest.nwc.acsalaska.net/dslreports/

http://testmy.net/

I changed the setting to 2048 in the manual upload speed and ran another speed test and sure enough it maxed out at 1.9meg on speedtest.net.

However, with the router set to auto uplink speed at over 5meg, I have been very pleased with the performance of black ops, tons better then my VDSL.

This weekend I am going to manually enter 2048 in the upload speed and play some games and I will report back on if anything changed.  Anyway I searched the web and cannot really find any good or bad info on limiting your upload speed except for this post on "IGN"

it's possible that you might leave the router set up for automatic Uplink speed instead of manual.

Okay I am confused on the add rules since the sticky changes when Furry adds rules for his PC's and changes the rules from XBOX 360a to port53..

"The Local IP Address range is the xbox IP addresses that are in sequence thus allowing for the addition of adding another xbox console and its IP address to the Remote IP Address range."

So the "from" is supposed to be xbox1 IP address and the "to" is supposed to be xbox2 IP or xbox3 IP sequentially for port53 and port3074, depending on how may xbox are connected to the router?

If so do I leave the network settings on the consoles in automatic or do I change them to manually and give each Xbox sequential IP addresses?

Should I just ignore this part of the sticky because this is where I get confused?

Enable: Check to enable it.
Name: Give any name to this rule.
Priority: Set the first xbox console to 1, graduate the number for each additional Xbox console. (1-255, 255 is the lowest priority)
Protocol: Set to Both.
Local IP Range: Reserved IP address of each xbox console in from and to boxes.
Local Port Range: 0 in from box, 3074 in to box.
Remote IP Range: 0.0.0.0 in from box, 255.255.255.255 in to box.
Remote Port Range: 0 in from box, 3074 in to box.

Name          Priority                   Local IP Range                        Remote IP Range                      Protocol / Ports
Xbox 360a       1           <XBox a IP> to <XBox a IP>      0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255               Both      0 / 3074
Xbox 360b       2           <XBox b IP> to <XBox b IP>      0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255               Both      0 / 3074
(Reserved IP address of the Xbox console entered in the Local IP Range from/to boxes.)

Sorry for the dumb questions
Thanks

follow the updated rules, the rules above the update are my initial findings years back. I just kept them as those configurations can still be used. I changed to inputing ports cuz it makes it easier to add multiple xboxes with out having to input a complete new rule.

That is what I figured but I am still not 100% sure what to put for the local IP range for port53 and port3074?
My xbox IP changes every time I turn it on and end in  three digits .196 not .49 or .50.
The network settings on the Xbox set to automatic correct?

remember those are examples of ip addresses. Even though they are actual addresses, the addresses can be anything however they are bases on what the router is set up. I chose to change my routers net addresses from default 192 to something else. You can do this too. Mine is based on my house number address.

Can teamviewer.com in and help you out.

Okay, I feel like an ***** but both Xbox are set up for automatic in the configure network (console settings).  One xbox ends in .194 and the other .198. The last three digits for my xbox will change from time to time.

What do I enter in the local IP range to and from?
With the Xbox set to auto I don't get where I am reserving an IP address and this is where I get confused.

Any chance you can make the 194 ip address to 197 or 199?
Then you would enter in 192.168.0.197 or 198 in the FROM box and 192.168.0.199 in the TO box for Local IP address range.

Yeah I would just have to reserve the IP address in each Xbox console but that would require me to change the auto obtain IP address to manual.

NO, reserve it on the router, not the consoles, leave them at auto.

Let me see if I understand this, when setting up the rules for the ports and I enter the local IP range is actually reserving the IP for my Xbox and when I turn on my xbox's it will automatically set my IP to what I entered in the local IP IP range for the ports on the router?

I am just don't get where an IP address is being reserved for the Xbox's.

Need to reserve the IP address for the xboxes on the router under Basic/Networking.
Then go to gamefuel and use those reserved IP addresses in the Local IP address range.
