DSP-W110 does not auto on after power interruption.
« on: February 07, 2016, 10:11:14 AM »

Hi All.

I bought a DSP-W110 so that I can power cycle a router that I have.  After configuring it and installing all of the relevant apps I was able to reset the outlet remotely.  Great!  I then pulled the DSP-W110 from the wall, waited 10 seconds and plugged it back in.  The router did not power up, but the led on the DSP-W110 had not gone green, so I waited. Unfortunately it did not restore power even after the led turned green.  I could restore power remotely or by pushing the power button, but it would not power up automatically.

I then created a schedule that was always on and assigned it to the DSP-W110. Still it would not come on after a power interruption.  Is this a bug or limitation?  Has anyone used it in a configuration where auto on was a default?  Please let me know.

Can you test this on a power strip and use the power strip power button to simulate a power outage to see if the DSP doesn't turn on with a standard lamp or something connected to the DSP?

FYI, if your having to power cycle your router, then there maybe other problems. Network routers should not have to be power cycled and can remain on always.

With a power bar and a lamp it behaves the same.  I can remotely turn it back on but it does not power up the lamp when electricity is restored.  Can you confirm that it acually does?  Router is a seperate vlan I use to isolate my kids internet traffic.  The firewall locks out traffic to the router periodically and I like to be able to reset it remotely.  Not great if it does not come up automatically if there is an outage.

I don't have experience with DSP units currently so I can only presume that if after a main power outage and it's restored, the DSP units logically should come to ready and perform it's tasks. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Reference this thread. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I contacted Dlink Canada and apparently the support guys need to try it and let me know.  I have to say that I would think this is basic functionality and that someone out there would have expected or seen the lack of this behavior.  I'll also scrub the web in case anyone else has found a workaround.

Anyhow, I will certainly let you know how it goes.

Ya I presume it should work. Keep us posted and keep in contact with D-Link support.

So tech support called me back and they were able to get a schedule to work. We tried it together with my "always on" schedule and it did not work.  They then asked me to use one of the other "advanced" schedules and to create a block over the current time for "on".  I saved the schedule, applied it and then pulled the plug.  After restoring power, the W110 came back and abouy 10 seconds later it came on.  This at least proved it worked.

After we hung up, satisfied that at least it was working, I tried a few more things.  I created schedule 2 so that there was an off cycle everday at 3:00 am. That worked.  I created schedule 3 the same way but with one off cycle at 3:00 am on Monday and another on Friday.  That worked too.  Not to bore you all, I basically found the following 2 conditions.

1.  A schedule needs to have at least one "off" cycle to work
2.  Don't change the schedule names from Advanced 1, 2 or 3

I could certainly live with that.  Thanks support team and I hope that this helps others trying to do something similar.

I've been posting in the 2630L and 2330L about wifi connectivity issues I've been having with my remote cameras.  They seem to recover if I can get someone on site to unplug and replug them.  I just purchased a 4-pack of these switches which I will install later this month.  Sad that I need to do that since I otherwise like the cameras.

I spoke with tech support regarding the DSP-W110 and am aware of the recent firmware update that "bricks" these switches.  They advised me not to install it until they have a fix out hopefully later this week.  I may wait quite a bit longer.  Also their web site indicates that they have revision A and revision B hardware.  I indicated when ordering directly from Dlink that I only wanted to receive revision B hardware.  Hopefully the new hardware revision is due to the fixing of some problems.

Thanks for posting your experiences and will keep you posted as I progress.

Thank you for sharing the support information you got. Glad D-Link is working on correcting the issue at hand.

Been a while since I posted here.  Just put two DSP-W110 switches into service and installed the latest firmware.  No problems yet but not much run time yet.  Will advise if any problems.

Kind of an old post, but I would have just programmed the router to deny internet at certain hours of the day. Most routers have that built in. A mechanical solution seems unnecessary. You can even program certain ranges of ip addresses to get denied and do reserve allocation for certain devices.
