Title: New to D-link routers and the 895L
Post by: heartsofwar on January 27, 2016, 04:15:02 PM
This is my first D-link router (DIR-895L), and I am a little confused about a couple things:

1. Where can I view the system log? The only options are setting up a Syslog Server or sending it via e-mail. Neither of which are useful when needing to inspect the log quickly on ocassion.

2. Where is Port triggering? I only see Port Forwarding / Virtual Servers which require IP addresses
2a. Is the only difference between Port Forwading and Virtual Servers that Virtual Servers can only specify ONE port and designate the internal port?

3. 2.4Ghz signal is really low / non-existant? Looks like one or two of the base metal antenna connectors were loose shorting the signal. After re-tightening, 2.4Ghz signal is really strong.

4. USB 3.0 port doesn't seem to recognize my USB SDOCK4U33, but the USB 2.0 port does. Is this some compatibility issue or is it expected?

5. Manual setup of no-ip Dynamic DNS does not work. This started working for some unknown reason.

Be aware that the new UI that D-Link is using is more simplified and thus some advanced features that you saw on older D-Link routers, may not be seen on newer generation routers.

2a. Is the only difference between Port Forwading and Virtual Servers that Virtual Servers can only specify ONE port and designate the internal port?
Difference between "Virtual Servers" and "Port Forwarding" (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=4235.0)

3. 2.4Ghz signal is really low / non-existant? Looks like one or two of the base metal antenna connectors were loose shorting the signal. After re-tightening, 2.4Ghz signal is really strong.
Glad you fixed this. Question, are the antenna's detachable or no?

4. USB 3.0 port doesn't seem to recognize my USB SDOCK4U33, but the USB 2.0 port does. Is this some compatibility issue or is it expected?
Is the USB device USB3.0 supporting? What format is the drive using? NTFS is recommended. What is the size of the USB drive?
5. Manual setup of no-ip Dynamic DNS does not work, I select manual and enter the following:

Server Address: dynupdate.no-ip.com
Host name: xxxxx.xxxxx.xxx
Username: xxxx
Password: xxxx
Timeout: 1

NO-IP does not show any updates.
We might need to check to ensure that your host name, user and account info is correctly entered in to the fields. Did this work on your prior router? What mfr and model router did you have before? Possible that D-Link support may need to review this.

As reported on the "Management->Upgrade" page:
Current Firmware Version:   1.00, Thu 05 Nov 2015
Current Firmware Date:   2015-11-05 16:52:00
This firmware is the latest version.

Hmm... I can understand Port Triggering, but being able to cursory inspect the log should be a basic supported feature. having support for a Syslog server or E-mail sending the logs seems more advanced.

2a. Difference between "Virtual Servers" and "Port Forwarding" (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=4235.0)

Ok, so my thought process was correct, but once any information is passed to the Virtual Server, the Virtual Server then broadcasts to all IPs internally on the designated port.

3. Glad you fixed this. Question, are the antenna's detachable or no?

Yes, the antennae are detachable (screw on / off), same with the metal receiving caps (which is what my problem was)

4. Is the USB device USB3.0 supporting? What format is the drive using? NTFS is recommended. What is the size of the USB drive?

Yes, the SDOCK4U33 is USB 3.0 compliant and the drive is 750GB NTFS. It is detected perfectly fine under the USB 2.0 port.

My previous router was incapable of manual no-ip settings and did not have no-ip built in; previously I was using a home server daemon to update no-ip, but seeing as this router support manual mode, I figured I'd try it. I double checked the host, user, and pass for correctness 3 times, and I downloaded the no-ip daemon source for linux to verify the server address. The only thing I don't see is a port specification... without cursory log information, I really can't verify what port is being using and whether it's the right one. (maybe I'll get to work on setting up e-mail log notifications).

Do you have this listed on your 895L?

Yes, but both of those require setup; I would prefer an in-line log reader so I could simply log-into the router and check the log for whatever I need. Like right now, I want to verify the port in which the manual Dynamic DNS is trying to use, but I can't without having to setup either a syslog server or e-mail notifications. Kind of a pain

D-Link routers haven't had an inline syslog server. They did have a router log capturing basic items. They've always just had the syslog support to pipe the data out to a syslog capture app on a PC.

You might try syslogwatch as a free capture app.

I downloaded something and I'm not familiar with this setup for sure.

I give up for tonight.

Does my computer have to be on to catch all these logs?
