Dead Power Adapter
« on: August 15, 2009, 09:19:08 AM »

When I woke up this morning, all the lights on my DGL-4100 were out.  I checked the output of the power adapter with a voltmeter, and it was 0V.

I took a power adapter from another D-Link router, and connected it to the DGL-4100, and it's working fine now.

I've bought two D-Link routers in my life, and with both of them, the power adapter has failed.  However, with the first one (DI-604 I believe), support was very nice, and sent me a whole new router.  This time, they wouldn't even talk to me unless I paid them.

I've never had an issue with any other brand, and the first issue I had with D-Link wasn't enough for me to stop buying D-Link, because of how helpful support was.  But if you're going to sell me a faulty product and refuse to support it, you've lost a customer.

I hear you.

I've had multiple D-Link Routers/switches/etc in about 10 years and I've had 3 power adapters fail -- all out of warranty.  You might think that it's bad power at my home or something, but I've moved recently and I've also had the problem at work.  In fact, one died while in my old home, one died in my new home and one died at work!

You wonder how poorly these are manufactured in a country that I will not say right now.  The quality control must be terrible because I've never heard of power blocks just dying like this.  I'm not an electronics expert, but these things shouldn't be designed to fail.  The routers are good, but the $1 power blocks should be at least improved to support the equipment.

If my next power block fails, I'm switching brands...

Eventually some adapters just give out or depending on the power levels in your house, can flucuate some and having brown outs can also impact the life of power adapters. Most adapters last for a long time. How long was it you had this 4100 power adapter before it failed?

I had one go out on me on my new Motorola SB 6120 just 5 months after buying it. Ya they replaced it for free. I presume if it happens again, might have to pay for it.

You email D-Link support and ask them if they sell replacements? Most DLink routers run the same voltage on there adapters.

You can get power adapters online from etailers.

Really most Mfrs have some form or problems with adapters however most are made fairly well. Not a big reason to jump ship. Things are perfect and don't last forever.

I recommend calling D-Link and ask to see if they will send you PS adapters for a fee.
