857 and UVERSE 3801 RG
« on: August 22, 2012, 09:52:50 AM »

So FWIW, I have my 857 set up to take signal from the RG and broadcast my wireless network.  I have done all of the setup according to the plan to "bridge" by getting into all of the QoS settings and such.  The network is somewhat stable, and the signal is much better in the rear of my house via my DAP 1360 repeater.  I have upgraded to the 1.02 FW, and all seems well.  There are intermittent signal drops, which are a pain, but I have solved the issue by toggling the wireless on/off button to reset the adapter.  Signal resets quickly and I am back up and running.  I assume this is the signals battling or some such issue, even though I have disabled the RG SSID broadcast.

So, I am happy, but this is a bug that I would love to solve.  Also, still haven't been able to configure my 857 to see my WD MyBook 3TB.  Not seen in the 857 UI or in any version of SharePort. (sigh)

Thanks to all who have helped me get to this point, especially you, Furry.

The endless wireless and DSL Uverse battles continue it seems.  ::)

I'm wondering maybe if you should turn the 857 into an AP and use it and the 1360 as your APs. Well if your current configuration is working and seems stable, go with it. Some day you might consider going to an ISP and where you can have a dedicated stand alone ISP modem.  ;D

You sure the wireless channels are different and are not colliding with any other neighboring Wifi? I wonder if something is going on with your wifi adapter as well. IF this is on PC or LT, make sure drivers are up to date for the adapter if needed.

Any chance you have a neighbor or family with a different DIR series router to test that 3TB drive on? Could have someone test it out if you were willing to ship it.  ::)

Here to help man.

I had my 857 wired through my 3801RG at one point.  But AT&T DSL is expensive for what you get and so I dropped it (kept the UVerse for TV which we love and is excellent) and got Charter high speed for internet.

I found that streaming YouTube through the AT&T RG was AWFUL.  Constant buffering even with 18-24 MB download speeds.  It's a known issue with AT&T and YouTube and it's rampant everywhere, not regionally.  The connection never seemed solid.  Like it was getting a weak or dirty signal or something.  It's fine for my wife and kids and what they use it for but I could tell a difference.

If your laptop or PC is dropping wireless signals, you're not alone.  My DIR-601 hates my Lenovo laptop's Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 adapter, but my DIR-857 and DGL-4500 loves them (or vice versa).

Any more status on the 3TB drive?

OK, I found the solution to my problem which is a lot like yours.

My UVerse access point (AP) is a Cisco NEV401-at.  It connects to the UVerse 3801 RG via an ethernet cable and is used for wireless TV.

The 857's are very sensitive to this AP and I'm going to assume sensitive to ANY AP near them.  The 5GHz band is super sensitive to it because the AP broadcasts on 5GHz.

I moved my UVerse/Cisco AP about 12 feet away from my 857 and it has been running flawlessly all day with 1.02 FW.

If any of you have any AP's broadcasting on 2.4GHz or 5.2GHz then do yourself a favor and move them as far away from the 857 as you can.  Luckily for me, 12-14 feet was about as far as I could go without having to drop a line from my attic and running it to another room.
