DIR-816l: Cant identify internet conection
« on: February 14, 2015, 02:45:47 PM »

Router - DLink DIR-816L
Hardware Ver - B1
Firmware Ver - 2.01
Modem - Cisco DPC3925

I have an internet provider thats already use a wireless modem combined with my cable tv and phone, but when i try to connect the ethernet cable from the modem to my dir-816l, it doesn't identify my internet conection.

With my other router dl 624, that configuration works well but the ethernet cable from the modem was connected on port 1 in the router and on the port 2 i had connected the cable that goes to my other pc, and that way my dl 624 was just repeating the internet signal.

The problem is that my dl 624t is gone, than i bought the dir 816l and cannot make it work.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

Your ISP modem is a gateway and had a built in router already:
http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC3925.html

You could use the 816L as a wired AP:

How did you get it to connect?

Did you setup a mydlink.com account first with a web browser, then use the emall address and PW used to great the account with in the router to activate the mydlink service?
Also possible that the ISP modem could be interfering...

The only way that is possible to register mydlink account is in the properly router, and it seems to be blocked by the ISP, but im not sure about that.

I also see that my wireless signal is very weak.

Possilble that your ISP modem/router is hindering accessibility to mydlink.
What is the IP address on the WAN side that the 816L sets from the ISP modem? Look under Status/Device Info/Internet IP address. Is it a ##.##.###.### or 192.168.#.#?

The modem was setup for 192.168.0.1 and the router on 192.168.0.7

Have you set up a reservation for the .0.7 IP address on the modem then put this into the modems DMZ? Try that and see if it helps...
Your in a double NAT condition which isn't recommended.

Hi, if you turned your DIR-816L into an AP (according to Furry's link), it can't access the Internet anymore (because it expects to reach the Internet over its WAN interface only which is unplugged in this case)

Only issue with using the 816L as an AP stand alone would be that mydlink and other WAN side features that depend on the WAN connection would no longer used as they are dependent on the WAN port being connected. If AP mode is use, then those features would not be used since only the LAN side is connected in this mode...
