BT problem in 1.05 - highly fragmented files
« on: May 17, 2008, 07:43:49 AM »

I was testing new BT feature and discovered something weird. Completed download files (from "BT\complete" folder) seem to suffer from high fragmentation. Transferring files from BT folder to PC (BT client is off, no seeding at the same time) is significally slower than usual (for example 4 MB/s instead of 12-13 MB/s). The only way to fix it is to make copy of "BT\complete" files (new non-fragmented files are created on Volume_1, transferring new files to PC gives normal speeds) and delete originals.

In my opinion this issue is caused because of incremental file creation. D-Link should implement "Allocate and zero new files on creation" option in the next version of firmware. Reserving a portion of the disk equal to the entire size of the torrent, and filling that space with zeroes will minimize fragmentation of the hard drive in comparison to incremental allocation.
