Why should I install Vista drivers?
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:13:50 AM »

I have my dns-323 (firmware 1.05) set up as a simple 2 disk media sharing system for my 3 pc network - 1 xp machine, 2 with vista (premium and ultimate). I have been prompted on both vista machines to install software for the nas but haven't bothered, as I can see the shared drives and read/write easily to them.
I don't use the nas for itunes, bittorrent, ftp.

What is the reason for installing drivers for vista?

???  I share in your wondering!  I just installed my DNS-323 on a Vista Home Premium machine and it seems to be working fine now.  Initially I think I had a bad firmware upgrade but the DNS-323 is working like it should.  (BTW - I never was prompted to load any Vista drivers.  I asked the D-Link Techie what the purpose of the drivers was and he didn't have a clue.)

I believe if you turn on the uPnP-AV server, Vista will ask you for the drivers.

Re Fordem's post....

I can't remember Vista asking me to install any drivers when I turned on uPNP server on the DNS323? I had to install the easy search software to map the network drive and that was it (i think :-\)

Did I miss something  ???

That makes sense!

The drivers are simply for LLTD Vista is asking for the PnP-X drivers. The device will function properly with out these drivers in Vista. They also add and Icon for the unit and the DNS-323 icon will now look like the unit itself.
