Title: Gaming and GameFuel Setup For PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Network.
Post by: LookIntoMyEyees on May 13, 2010, 08:54:39 PM
These setting have been tested and have given me a better online experience on the play station network and call of duty mw2. There is a thread by FurryNutz about setting it up but for the Xbox 360, I hope this helps you guys get a better online experience. Leave feedback on what you guys think and what might be wrong. Some users over on the play station forums have had an improvement with these settings. I myself enjoy playing with these settings almost if not all my matches on mw2 are full bars, I have also tested it with downloading content from PlayStation store and Play station home etc. Sorry for spell errors if any and for anything else. Remember leave comment on what you might think would be best to improve and feedback.

First you must open your browser and type 192.168.0.1 these are defaults login with admin no password needed. Before we open up ports for the PlayStation we must give it a static IP address but through the router. Reason for this is so when we open up ports the IP address of the PlayStation 3 it will never changed. Once logged in navigate to Basic > Network Setting Look for Number of dynamic DHCP Clients:?  Look for the PlayStation 3 Assigned IP address and click reserve.
How it should look: In the Tab Add DHCP RESERVATION that is where you put the info and reserve the ip aka gives it a static ip
(http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa64/chriz704/Untitled-1.png)
( If you don't know which one your PlayStation 3 please turn your PlayStation unit on and navigate To Settings > System Settings > System Information and it will give you the PlayStation 3 Mac Address look for it on the Number of dynamic DHCP clients on your router and that's how you know which one is your PlaySation 3) Once you have clicked on reserve you will see the tab above you the information will be entered for you Click enabled if is not checked Put the name you would want to give it (Put the name as PlayStation 3 I makes it easier for you later on) and click save and after that click save on the very top again if it ask you to reboot just click reboot later because we still got a little further to go. Now that you have a static IP address for your play station 3 we can move on to setting up game fuel. Navigate to Advance > Game Fuel and the highlighted Add Game fuel rule. Enable it, Set the priority you want 1 the highest priority and 255 the lowest give it a high priority means you want the router to give the play station 3 unit more bandwidth than any other device on the network.
ADD GAMEFUEL RULE
Enable: Check
Name:
Priority:   1      (1...255, 255 is the lowest priority)
Protocol :   <<   any
Local IP Range: 192.168.0.???   To 192.168.0.??? < Put the static IP we gave it from early.
Local Port Range: Disabled when Protocol is set to any
Remote IP Range: 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
Remote Port Range: Disabled when protocol is set to any
DGL 4500 Setting:  After testing I have noticed my ping is better on ps3 with settings like these.
Click add rule and save on the very top now you can reboot. Please notice that if you put priority 1 the router will make sure the PlayStation 3 gets more priority than any other device so if your other device slows down you may want to lower the priority. Now you have successfully set up game fuel for the play station 3 remember to reboot the router or settings will not be applied. I believe once you set up game fuel you will not need to open up ports but I opened them anyways in game settings. Now I want you to turn on your play station and play a game and see if the performance increased and let me know via here. It worked for me.
These are the ports you must open for port forward they might help performance so I opened them
Port forward DGL 4500:
: Open all of them just look at the image above.
I noticed that my router runs smoother and cooler when I turn off the logs how to get there simple Status > logs. You don't have to do it but I did it. Sometimes logs are good they tell you information that might help you solve an issue but like I said before my router ran cooler and smoother I believe.

Wow I'm confused now.  I tried it a few weeks ago and it seemed to work, but I had to updated my router and I can't seem to get it to work again.  Do I need to start all over and if so how?  Because now I show moderate on my PS3 connection instead of open like I did before.  Oh yea should, how is my ip assigned to my PS3 the same as the one you show in the picture?  Thanks for your help in advance..........RJ

Before you updated did you save off our configuration file? You can always configure the router as desired then save off the config file for later use and if you update, you need to do after is to re-load the config file and your good to go.

Sure start all over, reconfigure your wireless settings again and everything and then move on to this and follow this thread. So how do you restart the router back to default? easy. After you have successfully login to the router interface Navigate to > TOOLS > SYSTEM. Now you should be able to restore to factory default. As well save the configuration in case you ever need to update again.

Also this is not included in this version of the thread but you should do it, This helps make the comparability of network games work better. There are a few new tweaks I have, I will post once I think it is ready.

Once login the router (192.168.0.1) Navigate to Advance > Firewall. Follow this image, It really helps in performance. I believe credits go to FurryNutz. Thanks man.

Always try to configure the unit. Firmware updates are a last resort and not really needed if the unit is working great.

You will not need to update or re-upload FW. Doing a factory reset only wipes the user configuration area and any changes you've made to the routers settings and takes it back to default inbox settings. You safe. Now if you have done alot of configurations and want to keep them, you can save these settings off to a file for later use. Check out the Tools/System and save the file. That way you can re-load this file and not have to start all over again.

Title: Local I.P. Range question
Post by: Remingtonjoe on September 07, 2010, 03:04:42 PM
Hey guys.  I'm following this as best I can and sometimes on my PS3 my NAT Type is moderate.  Is that supposed to occur or should it always be Open after doing these things?  Also is my I.P. under the Local I.P. Range you mention above supposed to be the same as the one you show in the tutorial.  My shows 192.168.0.196 just like your picture.  Thanks for all the help your trying to give a noob lol......Todd

I have reposted a new version of this thread over here on the psn forums. Hopefully it will be posted here on the D link forum soon. In the meanwhile go review the new and improved version that I have posted here. Btw the nat tyoe you are getting is on call of duty am right? or what game are you talking about? http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/Gaming-and-GameFuel-Setup-For-PlayStation-3-amp-PSN-DGL-4500/td-p/45499731 (http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/Gaming-and-GameFuel-Setup-For-PlayStation-3-amp-PSN-DGL-4500/td-p/45499731)

looking at the guide it says: Additional Information:

As always I am contently upgrading and fixing and optimizing rules so you might want to check back on these rules once in a while.

These rules will not work if your Modem has its own router inside, you must call your ISP and have them bridge it to your DGL 4500.

Does that mean that I can not set it to open the ports in your guide?

Dam I kinda knew I should not have included that part in the thread -_- if only I knew it was going to bring more confusion. It's fine dude just set it up and if you have issues we will try to resolve those.

What, does your modem have a internal router inside? If you don't know than why ask that question? If you knew than yes I believe port forward will have issues since there will be two routers in the network. Have a great day, Cya

Thanks L.I.M.E.,

Works like a charm.. so far.

Do you or anyone else have Gaming Rule settings for Starcraft2 and WoW ?

I have them added per application, but SC2 shows no TCP ports, and WoW shows no UDP ports.
Was just wondering if theres a more optimal setting.

I went to the PS forum and printed out your write up.  I updated my router settings today and just went to play some COD MW2. It works much better! Thanks alot bro!!! Much appreciated. You have really helped alot of us out here.

So I tested it and although I'm playing online wirelessly... I have full bars on MW2. And my house is pretty good size.  My router is upstairs and the PS3 is downstairs and they are on oposite sides of the house. Pretty much as far away from eachother as possible. LOL!!! Previously with this router I would get a max or 3 out of 4 bars. So far no lag.. but did get kicked out due to MW2 server sucking so bad.

Works great man! Thanks alot. Now I think I need figure out how to prioritize the rest of my network like that.

Thank you for the great feedback 00Vette. I am glad the rules have helped you achieve a better online experience. I hope you enjoy them and continue to. Like always I am always working on new ways to improve it so check back once in a while I might improve them, but for now they are alright the way they are.

For myself, playing PS3 online via wireless, I found (albeit minimal testing) that it seemed to work better for me leaving the uplink speed at auto rather than setting it to what the cable provider states.  I have though noticed that I usually get more like 1Mbps rather than the 2 I'm suppose to get (Comcast 12/2) although I routinely measure 20Mbps down, so guess I can't complain too much.  I have a DOCSIS 3 modem too, but I know that doesn't help much for down speeds, at least not this one (SB6120).

IF your ISP provides you with 1Mbs upload but when you do a speed test you get 2Mbs than you should leave it auto or set it to 2Mbs/3Mbs. I always Like going above and beyond which can be bad or good. That's just me. Everyones network structures are different so you might just want to leave Automatic Uplink Speed : enabled. Btw zippoking are you using the gaming fuel rules? If so how are they doing for you? & like always guys have a great day cya & take care!

Its the other way around for me, they say it should be 2 (so that's what I tried as the setting) but I measure it to be 1 usually.  Maybe if I put in 1 that'll be better, but i don't want to restrict it either.  I wonder if setting the router to 2 but only being capable of 1 at some given point in time is also restrictive in some way, like it thinks it can do more than what's possible leading to some buffer overflow or something.  I have no idea how that stuff works though for this setting.  Maybe a MOD could tell us...

As for the rules, I have them on for MW2, but I thought we said that they don't make too much difference for console gaming anyway.  Also, my network doesn't usually see much additional traffic when I'm playing games, as its just 2 people at my place, and GF is usually watchin TV or some minimal internet surfing.  But I was torrenting something the other day with a total of ~500k down, 100k up and didn't notice any issues gaming.  But that's not much on a torrent, compared to some.

Ok Thanks for this information. I would suggest you if you do in fact set up the gaming fuel rules you should use the one posted over at playstation forums. Those are recent and proven much better than current ones here.

Yea,  the upload gets really tricky. You really just want to do some real life test of your upload and set it to that. Thats what the "Auto" setting "tries" to do. It does a capacity test to see what the max transfer rate and sets it to that. The problem being most Cable ISP use some soft of Speedboost, or Powerboost, to increase upload and download speeds. Not only does this make your upload inconsistent, but the act of using powerboost can actually change the way the data is piped and add latency to it.

So yea, way to go is test, set, then trial and error. First see what you "should" get, not including powerboost or anything. Then run some test, to several servers, at different parts of the day. If you get more then your standard rate, then set it to your standard rate. If you get less, then take the adverage and set it to that (but if you get less then 50% of your advertised speed, contact your ISP and make sure everything is OK). Once thats done, try it out and see if theres a difference. To be honest, I really think it doesn't matter all that much, if at all. Let me know though.

Triky you are right it does not matter, in overall you might just make your speeds a little better. You might as well just leave it auto.
