Can't watch mms streams, like internet TV (port 1755)
« on: June 15, 2010, 02:21:43 AM »

Application can connect, but doesn't get any response back. Bypassing router solves the problem.
Looks like there are not too many settings I can change allowing/disallowing particular ports for outgoing traffic.
How to fix this so I can watch mms streams?

I called DLink support, opened the case DSI-400-927087.
First rep there suggested to turn on multicast. I don't know why is this related, but this didn't help.
Then rep asked to change link speed from Auto 10/100 to just 100Mb and to reduce MTU from 1500 in increments to 1400. This also didn't help.
So I had to revert to my old Linksys router BEFSR41 from 8 years ago. This one works fine with MMS streams.

DLink: please fix this issue. This is a real issue with your firmware that you need to fix.
Firmware version is 1.01.
Example stream: mms://208.75.229.18/live1 (Georgian TV)

In DIR-655 manual (http://www.scribd.com/doc/20260195/D-Link-DIR-655-Manual) section APPLICATION LEVEL GATEWAY (ALG) CONFIGURATION explicitly allows user to enable mms streaming. But in DIR-601 -- no such checkbox.

You might not have the right router for this kinda of application. Have you set up any virtual server or port forwarding or application rules for the port your trying?

What HW version is this router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

The emulator for this router shows it's got ALG options under Advanced/Firewall. There are 4 options and they are all ON by default.

It worked even in 10yo linksys router.

HW version A1
FW version 1.02NA

I tried to forward all UDP on ports 1024-5000,5004,5005 to my host. But this didn't help. Otherwise, no forwarding or Application rules.

ALG options under Advanced/Firewall are all on. But mms option isn't there.

I also tried to dump all IP traffic with tcpdump with and without the router. I don't see any UDP packets coming in or out. Only TCP packets on 1755. and TCP connection gets stalled for some reason with the router present, like router doesn't pass some packets. So port forwarding and app rules shouldn't even matter.

Is Multi-cast Streaming enabled on this router?
If this router doesn't work for your application needs, I would recommend doing research on one that has the MMS feature. If the 655 has it, this might be a better router for you to use.

Enabling multi-cast doesn't help. Actually MMS has nothing to do with multicast.

I believe this is a bug in the router. But there is not way to attract DLink tech support attention as I hoped while posting here.

Yes, I am looking into other options. Probably Cisco Linksys is a better choice.

Don't think its a bug in the router as more of a feature that may have not been included in the router as a marketing thing. Most routers are the same however get marketing involved, then you get different ones and features that may or may not be the same. The lower end 600 series routers are mainly budget routers for home users just needing general internet and email services. Getting into more specific needs really requires the users to research routers to try and figure out what is really needed in a router. You could call Dlink and ask. IMO, something else is probably what you need here, weather it be Dlink or something different. WYSIWYG.

If this is marketing, this is a great marketing policy to get low reviews, pissed customers and very good for competition. I was very happy with Linksys before, now got this free DLink DIR-601 with cable service.
Going back to linksys now and recommend everyone else to do the same.

You get what you pay for man. Other DLink routers work well for what they are designed for. This one just probably isn't designed for what you need. Not a fault of Dlink here. Just user expectation doesn't match the needs vs hw features. I currently enjoy a DGL-4500 and a DIR-825. Good luck.
