Disable low data rates on DIR-605L
« on: June 29, 2016, 08:02:20 AM »

We have a DIR-605L in our office with about 10 client connected (notebook and smartphones some of them to access the internal network, some of them only for faster/cheaper internet access). The problem I have is that when a smartphone is moved to a location where it barely is in range of the router, data rates are dropping to 1mbit/s. If the phone generates some internet traffic, it blocks the whole wifi and ping and packet loss get really awful.

Is there a way to disable the low data rates (I think 1mbit/2mbit will be enough). Better having a phone switch to mobile data or another wifi that is nearer than having connection losses for other devices.

Here are my current Wifi settings:
Channel: 6 auto select disabled
SSID not hidden
WPA2 only, encryption AES PSK
Transmit Power: 100%
Wireless mode: 802.11n only (unfortunately having b/g disabled does not disable the low data rates)
Band with: 20/40
20/40 coexist: Disabled

All other options should be set to default values.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?

Try G mode only and test.
What is the distance between the phones and the router when they are moved?

Signal loss is inherently problematic at greater distances and with building materials along with interferences from other wifi signal sources. You may want to install an additional wifi AP at the remote location.

There are several other Wifis in the area depending on where I make the test. I have already selected channel 6 because it is the channel with least collisions. Unfortunately I have no control over neighbours making their wifis.

Try G mode only and test.
I will try that.

Up to 20 meters with some walls between. I think the range of the router is great, but there will always areas that are not covered.

I already have other access points in all other important locations. The problem is this:
Person A walks to the smoking area outside the building (I dont care about wifi coverage here).
The phone reduces data rate to 1 mbit/s
The phone generates traffic (some app is updating, the person is looking on Youtube etc.)
At 1mbit/s it takes the phone much longer to send data blocking the whole wifi

My goal is not to have these areas covered, but simply prevent some phones to block the rest of the clients out.

Try G mode only and test.

I have no option for g only, but I have tested g/b. The effect has been the same as with n only.

You might try updating FW to v2.08 and see if this may help:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-605l-wireless-n-300-home-cloud-router?revision=deu_revb#downloads
Link> >FW Update Process

If not, then you may need to either add one additional wireless AP at or near the remote location to allow the distant device to connect to it, rather than the 605L. The 605L is a budget router and may not be able to handle this kind of environment.
