Tested and DIR-880L firmware 1.01 is unstable.
- At the moment, it's been just sitting at the login page, trying to login, for about 5 minutes (after a power cycle too). This is the second time in 10 minutes. Two separate browsers used each time.
- the DHCP reservations page is unstable, it said one address for an IP reserved device, then refreshed and showed a different IP for it, then back to the original ... etc. The device itself had the correct reserved IP.
- the QOS reservations page showed an incorrect IP for a device, which was reserved as a different IP and showed as such in the DHCP reservation page. The device had the correct reserved IP. No amount of refreshing or rebooting changed it.
I'll try another power cycle and attempt to login again, however at the moment firmware v1.01 is looking as useful as a brick, for my purposes.
I'm beginning to feel I just wasted > $250 on the DIR-880L. edit: I will wait and see.
edit 1: Upgrade process was:
download 1.01 from dlink AUS website
manually upgrade
reset device to defaults settings (the indented button on the back)
manually start to enter new settings
turn on devices and start dhcp reservations
power cycle the devices to acquire new reserved IPs
power cycle the router (twice) because it won't let me login it just sits there (about to try a third power cycle)
edit 2:
Power cycled the DIR-880L a third time and now it lets me login.
The devices now show up OK in the DHCP reservations page.
The QOS page still shows a false IP address for one of my main PCs, ie a different IP address to what is shown in the dhcp reservations page.
Query: if its showing different addresses for the same device attached to the router, what's the router doing under the covers ... ie how can I be confident that there are no foul-ups inside the device going on when it is doing its routing ? (is it also related to the DNS servers issue I reported earlier?)

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection
Your router maybe defective as you seem to be the only one experiencing this issue, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

My DIR-880L started behaving abnormally. Got an offer to RMA it which I will.

Even after a power-on and power-off, when I try to login into the router after entering the pw and clicking the login button ... it just sits there and never leaves that screen, the login button just stays greyed out. It still lets me access the net, just not login into the thing.
That DIR-880L router behaviour was repeated 6 times, using 3 different browsers across two power-cycles. The PC is a clean Win7 rebuild.
I'll try a factory reset and reload saved config-settings and see if it improves.
then ...
1. hard-reset button failed first try (PC obtained same IP from home-grown DHCP range)
2. hard-reset button failed second try (PC obtained same DHCP home-grown IP range)
3. hard-reset succeeded third try the router/PC got an address in the 192.168.100.* range
- logged in without any password, fine
- reloaded saved defaults (which had been tested before)
- PC got a home-grown DHCP IP (good, that worked)
- now same symptom, stuck at login screen again even with no password
4. power-cycled, same result
- tried again with a pw not blank, got immediate "invalid password" which shows it does try do something
Just some side items of interest ...
DIR-880L router WAN-connected into a Telstra Netgear c6300 cable modem on a cat6 cabled hard-configured 1Gbps connection averaged about ~82Mb/s speed-test with multiple tests over multiple days.
DIR-655 router WAN-connected into a Telstra Netgear c6300 cable modem on same cat6 cabled hard-configured 1Gbps connection now averages about ~22Mb/s speed-test.
PC direct-connected into the Telstra Netgear c6300 cable modem averages about ~95.5Mb/s speed-test.
PC to PC large file copies via the router all belt along at the hoped-for full Gbps.
As an aside ... Goggling problems with the new range of routers across the manufacturers.
Netgear R7000 (continual wifi dropouts, large numbers of dissatisfied customer reviews say so, also on their own support forums)
ASUS RT-AC68U (continual wifi dropouts, larger numbers of dissatisfied customer reviews say so, eg seemingly hundreds just on amazon alone).
AFAIK the DIR-880L wasn't giving me wifi dropouts ... I must remember to test it when hopefully I receive a replacement 880L.
Out of interest, does anyone know if the new routers all use the same chips/manufacturer ?

Wonder of wonders. For a reason unkown to me, after being left powered off long enough (weeks) it allowed me to factory-reset it.
The DIR-880L's WAN "throughput/performance" bug/limitation still exists
ie the DIR-655 has d/l from the WAN port internet of 105Mbps whereas the "new" DIR-880L in the same WAN router port only (under)achieves circa 80-85Mbps.
I notice there's a new firmware 1.05b02 and I'm tempted to give it a go. Do you think it'd be worth a try ?

What version do you have currnetly loaded on it?
One test you can do is to put the 880L into an AP mode setting and turn OFF the main host routers wifi entirely and connect up the 880L and use it as a upgraded wifi with you main host router: Turning a router into an AP. (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0)
