I just got the camera today, looks good, works good, at least so far.. BUT I was SURE this camera had a battery and charge function!? What's the point of having this camera if I can't place it say inside my car or in the garage (where it needs to be hidden, alas I can't use any cords!) ?? Help!!!

The DCS-942L requires a persistent external power supply to operate. The camera does not have an in internal battery capable of powering-up and operating the unit.

Yeah I figured. I think I'll just buy a 12V -> 220v (as we use in Norway) car adapter and place the cam in the car so that it'll film out of the car and towards the house! Is this a good solution?

I can't comment on the power requirements, but so long as your solution provides persistent power and matches the power specifications required by the DCS-942L, I don't see any reason that solution shouldn't work. This solution is at your own risk, as the DCS-942L was not intended out-of-the-box to be powered in that manner.

Not only the power cord you need, but also the network connection too. If the camera has the power and put in a stand alone (offline) place without the network/router, it will not operate, the power led will be red color. assume that the camera has micro SD card to record the image.

On next day, I have test 942L SD-Recording function while the device has not connect to any cable LAN and wifi. (red power LED). This camera can operate video recording into micro SD card according to the Motion Detection and SD Recording setting. Please ignore my previous incorrect message.
FYI. base on current firmware 1.12, sd recording can support maximum 6 minutes video per file.
