storage access
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:50:05 AM »

Hello !

Sorry for my bad English...

I installed recently a 860L, and I have the following problems (Hardware A1, firmware 1.07, Europe)

First :
I connected a Western Digital HD of 4 To, USB 3, to the router . I know that it is large, but I thought that the router could support modern storage. The disk is recognized (NTFS).
I created some users in the storage interface of the router, with read/write access to specific folders.
I succeeded to access to the corresponding accounts using web interface (Windows, IE or Firefox). However this interface is really to poor to manage a large number of files.
I would like to access the drive through the mapped drive, i.e.  SharePort Plus (version 4.30, windows 7 , 64b).
However, I can access the disk only with the admin login and password, not with the standard user account created before. Then I have a full access to the disk. Is it normal that only the admin account works for this connexion ?
I asked to Dlink, they answer me - sorry, it's in bad french :
"nous vous informons qu'il n'est pas possible de créer plusieurs utilisateurs autre que 'ADMIN' " .
I think they don't understand my question.
Any idea about this issue ?

Second problem :
The datarate is slow even using 300Mb Wifi (around 6 Mbytes / s for writing through the network), I decided firstly to connect the disk directly to my PC in order to transfer my files to be saved (more than 1 TB of very large pictures, I am photographer...), before to use them as network storage. The direct transfer was ok (60 Mbyte/s, thanks to USB 3.0).
However, when I connect now the disk to the router, it is near to hang. It becomes very slow, even the access to 192.168.0.1 is very very slow. The wifi sometimes disconnects.
It seems to me (hypothesis)  that the processor is scanning all my files to build a database of pictures / video, etc, and the processor is not able to support the charge. If it's true, you can forget to use this router for storage !
Any suggestion to avoid this scan ?
Thank you for your help
J.

Link>Welcome!

Try this:
How to map a USB Drive to your PC without using Shareport software

Using 2.4Ghz Wifi could be problematic as data rates on 2.4Ghz depend on many variables that impact performance. The most I've ever seen on 2.4Ghz with 300Mb is about 6-9Mb. This is using single mode N, WPA2/AES Only with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence disabled.

I recommend that if your needed to do large data xfers from PC to the USB storage device, use the 5ghz radio, if your PC support 5Ghz WiFi connections, upgrade the PC to 5Ghz support, Wired LAN connections or change how the USB drive connects to the network by installing a USB to Network LAN device instead of connecting the USB drive to the router, connect it to the adapter and the you'd have better connections with the USB drive from any device on the network.

Thanks, I already tried also the direct mapping to \\192.168.0.1\Storage(A0) without SharePort, and I have the same problem (works only for admin).

About the connection, I am already connected using 5 Ghz (Asus Usb N66). The configuration of Asus connection is 2.4G+5G, however when I look to the wireless status of the Dlink, it seems that I use only 5Ghz

I believe only admin will work for using the mapped option.

Try setting the 5Ghz radio to Single mode N or AC if the USB adapter is AC supporting, Auto Channel scan, Auto 20/40/80Mhz and WPA2 and AES only and see how that works.

How far is the PC from the router? 6' minimum to test and in line of sight. 5Ghz is susceptible to walls, doors and building materials. Nature of the beast with 5Ghz.

I tried with a smaller hard disk, only 931 GB, newly ntfs formatted, still the same problem with login. It's possible that the mapping works only with admin, but it's not very practical. The internal users of the "storage" are probably users of an internal file server, whereas they should be connected to some Samba configuration. Probably not complicated to do, perhaps in the next firmware release ?
Moreover the button "disconnect" of Shareport is never activated.

About the speed: my usb wifi adapter does not support 802.11ac. It is supposed to be a 450 Mb/s Wifi adapter (dual bad 802.n), which should be enough since max speed of USB 2.0 is 480 MB/s. However, the 450 MB/s rate should be the addition of 150 (2.4 Ghz) and 300 (5 Ghz), and when I activate the connection, only one of the frequency is used. All other features are already set to WAP2, AES.

Here's what I tested on my 868L which I presume has similar HW and FW code base from what I'm told:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58312.0

Officially D-Link mainly supports 500Gb drive and no bigger...

However since you are in a different region, I don't know if these similarities or results could be different across the regions. Each region does FW a little bit different sometimes.

Yes the connection between the adapter and the router should be at maximum supported speed of your adapter. These are not speeds that you will see in actual file xfers. However, there could be some compatibility issues since this is a non-D-Link adapter and we dont' know what HW chip is used in the adapter. We've seen various issues between Broadcom, Realtek and Atheros HW and having them all work together on different platforms.

If your adapter is only supporting N mode on 5Ghz, then set both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios to single mode N, WPA2/AES only, Channel Width to Auto and disable HT 20/40Mhz co-existence if you don't have any G mode devcies.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Thanks for the answer.
On my Dlink official documentation, 1 To is supported.
I checked my 4 To today using direct usb connection to the pc, since it is not possible anymore to use it with the router since I copied more than 1To of files on it.
I found that the router try to create a .metadata subdirectory into each directory, containing 6 files. Since I have near 27 000 directories on the disk, i understand why the router becomes not reachable...
This "storage" is clearly not well dimensioned for my problem, I have to replace it by a NAS server...

Moreover, I checked using the smbclient command that only one shared (the full device) is performed by the embedded Samba, that's probably why the sharing is only available using admin logon (others logon are rejected by samba). It's a pity, since internal users created int the "storage" menu, could easily have access to their subdirectory using a specific shared directory.
Finally the internal ftp server of the embedded linux is not activated. All these features are probably not activated for commercial reasons, in order to avoid the router to become a NAS concurrent...

About the dlink  phone link : I tried the french one, but I stopped to wait after 20mn without answer. I am probably not patient enough  :)
Cheers

1 To? I presume this the 1Tb?

Ya, If 1Tb is only supported then I presume the 4Tb will probably not work...I recommend using a 1Tb drive or go with a NAS device.

Overall, there is a reason for not using large drive sized on these routers..there becomes a point when the drive gets to much information on it and the router has to catalog the contents and that in it self if time consuming. I recommend that you use a USB to LAN network converter on the 4Tb drive or share out the USB drive on a always online PC or move your data off the drive to a NAS device.

The Storage feature is mainly for Shareport users and accessibility via Shareport, remote and local.

Good Luck.
