2.4GHz or 5GHz????
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:25:31 PM »

What is better?  What do you guys use and why?

I just noticed that this router isn't a true dual band that you have to select between the two.  So do you guys prefer 5GHz over the 2.4GHz?  Mine is preset to 2.4GHz and I was thinking of switching.

If all your adapters support N and 5GHZ, then thats the way to go. Only thing bad about it is alot of adapters have no, or limited, support for it. Honestly though, for all my gaming, I do wired.

I use N 2.4Ghz here...5 Ghz is ok but walls and stuff in the way hamper it's signal strength. 5Ghz is best if there isn't any walls or doors for floors in the way. Line of sight!

Yeah, I used to as well... but with my PS3 and the way my house is setup... it works best to have the PS3 hooked up wirelessly.  But I got set up my router today so the wireless upload speed is just over 2mbps which is more than enough for MW2, and I have an insane signal strength considering the distance between the PS3 and router. But yeah I hear you, I'd prefer it was wired... just ensures the fastest connection!

I'd also love to see a guest network feature on this router.  For D-links top of the line piece of equipment, I think they could have put a little more into it. :)

Thats good to know.  The way I have my network setup, makes it so there is a long distance from the router to the living room (where most people game or chill with a laptop)... so that is a great piece of info.

It also helps to have your router central to your area or house so that the signal gets most places evently.

Hmm, I guess I didn't really think about this before posting. I was thinking N vs G, not 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz. So kudos to Furry. Yea, the higher the freq generally the shorter the range. I have mine set to 2.4ghz N and G so I get good range but the throughput bonus of N for when I am streaming from my desktop to my laptop.

FYI you can't use 5GHz and connect a PS3 wirelessly, as it only uses G mode which is not compatible with the 5GHz mode.  Boo to Sony on that one, no N upgrade in sight to make that work that I've heard of.  But if you connect that with ethernet and have no other devices that must use G only (like some phones, old computers) then it can be better, with the afore mentioned possible signal strength through wall issues.  Also note, really old stuff that has wireless-A (one of the first standards) will work with 5GHz, so if it says a/b/g rather than just b/g you're good too.

Yeah, I need to try and get it centralized.  I was thinking of putting it in the upstairs hallway but then I'd have to figure out how to get an ethernet cable into my room where my desktop is.  Could try and put it through the wall... but sounds like a PITA.

None the less, that would be the ideal setup.  However, right now I'm getting a great gaming experience.  I'm getting around 60% signal strength and full bars on MW2 with my PS3. Before this router and the Game Fuel rule, I was getting 37-45% signal strength and 3 of 4 bars on MW2 (DIR-655).
