Losing dhcp clients and reboots- lose smb
« on: August 22, 2018, 09:06:42 AM »

Have a problem for a couple of months now. I seem to lose DHCP clients on the connected list (Front page of router log in). Happens mostly at night or evening. Also the router often reboots. Is this a security problem. Should I install the last beta firmware patch.  Could something else cause this. Also I seem to get my smb shares randonly. Sometimes it is visable on my computer sometimes no. Starting to lose my mind.
ps last months added wifi light swiches. total connections average 25-30 DCHP client connections

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

What devices do you have connected to the router?
What shares do you have configured? This on a PC or NAS?

  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Yes you can update FW: Link> >FW Update Process

You can update. If it doesn't work for you you can revert back to v1.20.

Yes I will try the update as a last resort. Is there anything else I can do to resolve this.

Possible that one of your devices could be causing this. You would have to disconnect them save maybe a few and leave connected and see.
Also what browser are you using? Seeing same UI behavior in IE11, FF or Opera?

Yes tried disconnecting them one by one. May slow down the process but it eventually come back. I usually use firefox but tried chrome with similar results.

Are all the devices connected to the router or do you have range extenders?

Does it tend to lose connectivity during streaming or heavy network load or completely random times?

Are there specific devices that are disconnecting?

If you disconnect the drive from the router does everything else run normal?

What is the Mfr and model of this USB drive?
Size of the drive?
Does it have it's own power supply adapter?

The drive is
Seagate Backup Plus 4TB 2.5" 5400RPM USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (STDR4000100)
It does not have an external power supply

Larger sized drives sometimes need additional power.  :-\

I would temporarily disconnect the USB drive and just run the router and your other devices and see if the problem still appears...

Yes I tried that with no drive but still lose dchp client lists over time, sometimes I can still reach device with a direct ip address but fall off list. eventually all drops from the list and router reboots. Actually seems to happen when i go check settings home page with firefox, chrome or app. if I don't check it or log in it seems more stable. As far as smb shares tried a 500gb drive with same results. If I take the drive out then I obviously cant see the smb. The more I think about it, it seems the dchp list drop to be related to logging in to router though web sever or the mydlink app. CONFUSED...

I would go ahead and install the FW beta update. Factory reset, install, factory reset once more then setup from scratch.

Are the devices actually losing connectivity or is it ONLY in the Connected Client list in the UI? Need to know if this is cosmetic or the router is actually dropping your devices.

Ok yes first starts dropping dchp clients from list only cosmetic. as I lose more "cosmetic"clients off the list ( can still access them) over time. When the list is down to only a few then the router starts to actually drop them and eventually restarts or reboots. but it seems provoked by logging in to router UI
Almost feels like i am being hacked but that is probably ulikely.
