Title: 3TB - WD MyBook Essentials
Post by: wesmac75 on May 26, 2012, 08:52:59 AM
Hello,  been reading your forum posts, and I know this router is new.  I bought it specifically because my e4200 could not (although it was supposed to) connect to my WD 3TB external.

I have run the gamut of reformatting, flashing the latest firmware, and all that fun stuff.  I even called D Link support.  They told me that anything above 500GB isn't supported!  Really?  Aren't most of the folks interested in this drive going to connect something bigger than that?
It doesn't say anywhere that it has a 500GB limit.  Shareport Plus seems very cool, but it won't recognize my drive.  From my research, I can't really find a router that does.  (especially with USB 3.0)
I emailed support as well, requesting a fix.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?  I can't be the only one that wants this setup.

Thanks!

Not sure if that will help any. This may be a limitation of the FW.

Does the MYBOOK have a network connection or just USB? If it's only USB, it's not NAS.
I would contact JavaLawyer and ask him if he recommends any thing regarding what drives to use. He mainly in the DNS forums, which are NAS. They handle bigger sizes and has lots of information on what DNS use. He might have information on drives however they might not pertain to DIR series routers. I agree that the USB port should be able to handle just about anything however we don't know and will probably never know why it doesn't. It will be up to DLink to decide to support higher sizes or not. Personally, I connect MyBook 2TB external to my file server and share it out. Less hassle and works well and the file server can manage and run back up's as needed. Hook up printer items or use the max size on the USB port then use Shareport for now.

Let us know if you hear anything back from DLink support.

You are correct.  Not NAS.  They tout the USB 3.0 connection and limit the size to 500GB.  I will post any and all responses from DLINK.

Connect to your file server?  How did you do that?

Thanks for the response.

Connect the USB cable to my file server and share out the drive letter it's connected too. Works well. I use FBackup on 3 of my PCs including the server to do backups to it. Work great for my needs.

I'm sorry, I don't follow.  Is your file server an external HDD?  I know how to share via win7.

What I really wanted was a cloud-like ability to access my files from anywhere.  We have a multi-laptop home, and my wife would love to have access to all of our media, rather than having to connect to a wired device.  I am trying to make it easy, and it's just so f-ing difficult?  I really didn't think this type of setup was that out of the ordinary.  The e4200 had the ability to access files via ftp, which sounds great.  The drive specified by their labs didn't work, for whatever reason.  To their credit, they are reimbursing me my money.  The DIR 857 has the ability to handle this, I'm sure.  They just need to add this capability.  People are buying bigger and bigger drives.  Like I said, I didn't think I was ahead of the curve on this one.

Thanks for your responses!

I have a separate PC with Win 7 loaded and share out the drives I have connected.

Got it.  Thanks you.  I dealt with homeshare and all that a few times.  It's a good call for private network.  Thanks!

Every time I think I have something figured out.  I hate relying on possible updates.  They just released a new firmware this week.  Probably not a new one for a while.

Update:  I shrunk my WD 3TB volume so that it's under 2TB.  I was hoping that it would be seen by Shareport Plus.  No dice.

It's going to have to be addressed by engineering if it is to be solved.

Bummer.

Ya doing that won't change how the router sees the drive It's looking at firmware data code coming from the drive that states the 3Tb size, not the size of the paritions.  :-\

So I thought I had it figured out.  I have ATT Uverse and although my speed and internet quality was good, my 857 and the Uverse 2Wire RG weren't on the same subnet.  After some work, I reconfigured them, thinking that must be what is causing my inability to see the 3TB drive via the router IP interface or in Shareport.

It wasn't.  Anybody know what I could look at next?  Thanks to Furry, who has been attentive to this issue.

I had the same issue with two WD Passport Essential HDD, the first is 500GB and the other is 1TB. The last one is a USB 3.0 drive and the first is USB 2.0. I updated the firmware for the router and the drives but the SP utility cannot see them, although it can see USB thumb drives when connected to the router. I gave up on this issue for now although I wish I was able to connect my 1 TB drive to use it for network backup. I have just one laptop and don't have a server or other PCs sharing the network.

I am sure it something to do with the SP software, but this is just a guess. ???

Only thing I could recommend is either try a different DIR router as a test, say a 827 or a 645 or a 657 if you have store that has a good refund policy and see if SP works for this 3Tb drive on one of them. I might suggests the if you have a friend, family or neighbor that has a Dlink router, try that and see. Would be interested to see if it work on a different model. What was your old router model?

I might also try a different external drive as well as see.  :-\

If you can't find a different router to test, might suggest sending it to someone trustworthy to test out on there 857.  ;)

My former router was the infamous e4200 v1.  I just wish DLInk would either release approved HDD's or not market that their product will work with any USB drive.  Liar Liar pants on fire.

Thanks for the suggestions, I even tried creatively partitioning the drive to make sure that it wasn't the size of the drive that mattered.

It really shouldn't be this difficult, should it?

Theoretically it shouldn't be that hard, however there being so many different mfrs of HDDs, it would be kind if hard to say that making all of them work wouldnt' be major undertaking. Yes I agree that for the most part, the underlying platforms for HDDs and USB should be mainstream standards used between all HDDs and the USB connections. However when it comes to Shareport and these routers. I seen various problems in using this function and have personally chosen to avoid use it unless I'm helping to test a device like I have here in the forums. Most of the time it works and does for my 2Tb My Book. I have seen it were FW was involved and breaks Shareport like we are currently seeing on the DIR-655 v2.07 FW. It's possible there could be an issue with FW and SP and your particular model HDD drive. If Dlink said only 500Gb drive is supported, I presume this means physical drive space on one drive. I'll have to go look at my drive however I think it's got 2 500Gb drives and uses the SW to gain the 2Tb size in some RAID configuration. I wonder if your 3Tb drive has larger physical drives bigger than 500gb. Possible?

One other suggestion, do you have a smaller USB drive that you can test out? Friend or get one at a store with a refund policy. If you can find an actual 250 or 500Gb physical sized drive to test out. If this works on your router, then you'll know.

Doing some more digging, I happen to download the lastest version of SP and unzipped the package from here: DIR-835 (http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-835-wireless-n750-dual-band-router).

I drilled down and found there was a Help folder in HTML and opened it up in IE.
I went to the Troubleshooting/An error occurs when I connect to a USB device using SharePort Plus section.
It reports:
The device server may not support the USB device.
Solution - The device server does not support USB devices which operate using Isochronous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isochronous) transfer.  Please confirm that the connected USB device is not an isochronous device.  For details on the USB device's specification, please contact its manufacturer.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your HDD and working with this router or not.

BTW, you don't have this version of SP already, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

FWIW, the Uverse leader's assessment:

Oh, I see. The DIR-857 has a feature where you can just plug in a USB drive and it becomes a file server for that drive.

In this case, I'm 99% sure the problem is that the drive is 3TB. Drives exceeding 2TB must use a GPT partition table or otherwise have to have some type of sector remapping mechanism within the drive controller in order to be used. I almost guarantee that the DIR-857 does not have this capability, so it's not able to use the drive.

Ok then, sounds like we have an answer.  ::) Makes sense, I bet your physical drive sizes are bigger than 500Gb's, probably 1Tb.

So, any chance of you connecting this drive to a PC and sharing it out for use?

I could.  That would mean always having my tower on in the back of the condo.

I suppose that's all I can do.  I really wanted to take advantage of this technology.  I guess it's just not  there yet.

Thanks FN!

I am currently using 1 TB on this router. It did not connect initially but I figured out that there was a password lock on the WD Passport SE. Removed the password, reconnected and worked like a charm. Try to remove the password and see if it connects. I have a 2 TB WD My book live connected to this router and there are no issues at all. For Shareport plus utility, use the one that is available with the DIR -835 from Dlink website or the one that is available through the router CD.
