Problem with opening port
« on: January 23, 2014, 08:45:41 AM »

Hi,

I have a problem with opening port on my router. I want to be able to switch on my NAS remotely (WOL over the internet) and later to include also the access to it. It seemed like easy task, but no success. I have red lot of forums with no result, except of lost time. If there is any related forum, please drive me in.

Facts:

I have the DIR-655 router hardware version is B1, firmware is 2.09, connected to ISP (UPC Czech Rep.) via cable modem Cisco EPC3212. The NAS is not as that important, just that WOL on the LAN works very well.

Now let me to summarize what I did:

  • I have reset the router to the factory settings.
  • I have set the Internet
  • and set the Wireless, which is not important.
  • Next I set the network
  • I have enabled remote admin and set the time.
  • Also the DDNS has been successfully registered.
  • Then I moved to Advanced. First I set the QoS.
  • and then Virtual Server

Then I checked if the port 9999 is opened using the port check http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ on the WAN IP address of my router. But bad luck. I have tried also admin port 8181 with success. I have then checked the log in the router all packets for port 9999 have been dropped.

What I did wrong? Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Is uPnP enabled? Disable that and test again...

UPnP has been enabled, so I disabled it. No change, according to the log, packets are still dropped  :'(

  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

WOL may not work on this model router, however please review the WOL docs in the FAQ Library

Hi,

thank you for your answer. I have checked the tech. specs. of Cisco EPC3212 once more, it is purely the cable modem without any router capabilities. I think there are also couple of other confirmations:

  • the WAN IP is granted from ISP (it is not 192.168.x.x or 10.0.0.x)
  • DDNS service is connected
  • ping to the checked port is recorded by the router

This router is WOL capable, on the LAN it works perfectly. It looks like the router keeps dropping packets on given port.

  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.

See if the WoL documents in the FAQ Library will be of any help...
