Unable to Map drive on network
« on: October 09, 2011, 11:17:20 AM »

Hi,

I just bought a D-link share centre 320. I had a few problems with set up (install wizard crash formatting the drive), but managed to get through them by browsing the forum. However, now I have hit a brick wall.

Basically, I am unable to map the sharecentre as a drive on windows.

To be clear:

1. I can access the drive via its ip address given by the router - I managed to format the (single WD 2TB) drive and upgrade the firmware to 2.0 via the web browser.
2. I can ping the drive at the ip address and it responds
3. The first part of the setup wizard located the drive easy enough via the network and yet the easy setup utiluty cannot locate it

A further consideration that might be of use: The ideal configuration of the sharecenter is not plugged in directly to the router, but rather via a D-link powerline which I have connected to the router no worries and its using a different IP address. However, thinking this might be the issue I tried to connect it direct to the router and no luck.

Help! I am a network noob and this has got me stumped.

Thanks for any assistance.

Manually mapping a network drive:

(1) In Windows, right click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive"
(2) For "Drive" select an unused drive letter
(3a) Under Folder, select "Browse" and choose the directory you want to map OR
(3b) Enter the HDD location directly: \\IP_ADDRESS\Volume_1 (this will map the root directory) OR
(3c) Enter \\IP_ADDRESS\Volume_1\DIRECTORY_NAME\
(4) The mapped drives should appear when you open "My Computer"

Wow,

That was easy and amazing. I just mapped the drive in a flash.

Thanks JavaLawyer - you saved me hours of frustration.

Thank you!

Thanks, I'm glad everything worked out. You can save shortcuts to the mapped drives on your desktop for easy access.

One note: There's a Windows 7 bug where if you keep more than 4 network drive shortcuts on your desktop, the OS will periodically delete all of them. Microsoft has known about this issue for some time now, and I'm not sure if it was resolved yet.

Thanks for the tip. FYI and for others with similar problems I used your second configuration (3b) as the network was hidden behind a preexisting windows network which I had to pass through before it would allow me access to the d link.  This hid it from me before when I tried to browse for it.
