Connectivty problems with DIR 865L router
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:16:07 PM »

I had got a DIR 865L few weeks back from my ISP (Starhub), as part of their Internet package. Till a couple of days back it was working fine. However, since the last 2 days, I'm facing issues in connecting to the router on the 2.4Ghz wifi spectrum. Details are as below:

After I power on the router, I can see my wifi signal on both the 2.4Ghz & 5 Ghz spectrums. However when I try to connect my laptop/desktop or mobile phone to the 2.4Ghz wifi network, they don't connect (all them fails). I have tried connecting to the router by standing close to it and even away from it. When I'm close to the router (within 5 feet), I get a strong signal (full bars) but my devices still doesn't connect.

If I try to connect to the 5 Ghz spectrum, my devices connect without any issues. After connecting through the 5Ghz spectrum, I can even access the Internet and the router's admin screens. When I check the status of the wifi connections in the router's status screen, it shows that the 2.4Ghz is on and working without any issues - however I simply can't connect to it!

I have tried to restart the router & connect to the 2.4Ghz spectrum again. Most of the time even after a restart it doesn't connect. However, at times (approximately 1 in 5 restarts), I'm able to connect to the 2.4Ghz wifi spectrum (along with the 5Ghz one), but then the connection link speed is on the lower side.

The setting for 2.4Ghz wireless spectrum on the router is as follows:
802.11 Mode: 802.11n.Only
Enable Auto ChannelScan: Yes
Channel Width: Auto.20/40
Visibility Status: Visible
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA2 Only
Cypher Type: AES
Group Key Update Interval:3600

My firmware version is 1.06, hardware version is A1

Can someone help me in fixing this issue? Do I need to RMA this router?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Wireless Configurations

  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

My Answers below:

What region are you located?
Singapore

Has a Factory Reset been performed?
Yes

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
Yes

FW Update Process
Was the router working before any firmware updates?
Yes

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Fiber

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Huawei echolife (it's nothing to do with the modem)

Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
Dynamic

What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Up Speed: 100Mbps
Down Speed: 100 Mbps

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
SSID name has been changed from default and is unique (ie. different from neighbors)

What wireless modes are you using?
2.4Ghz (n only mode)
5Ghz (ac mode)

2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Very slow speeds

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Tried both, but no difference

Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
Same problem - is there a reason why 11 is recommended for single N mode?

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto
Security mode is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. My adapters support AES (works with other brand's router)

TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Desktop, Laptop & Mobile Phone

Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
Cordless present. I tried after switching off the cordless but not much difference

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Quite a few of them, around 8-10.

If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Have tried these combinations but doesn't help

No. I contacted the Dlink Service centre here. After walking me through their diagnostics steps, they mentioned that the routers seems defective. I have been asked to contact their service centre for a 1-to-1 replacement.

My existing router is brand new (2-3 weeks old) - just hope that I don't end up getting a refurbished one  :-X
