Port forwarding stopped working when I switched to PPPoE
« on: June 16, 2015, 02:05:31 PM »

I had port forwarding working with my old modem. That modem didn't have a modem only mode so I forwarded all inbound traffic to the 880L via DMZ. Then happily forwarded those ports to my static IP machine that I wanted to listen to (MySQL and a couple of other things).

Now I moved from ADSL to VDSL I have a new ISP and modem. This modem, has a bridge mode and when it's set up I enter PPPoE ISP details on the 880L. Internet works fine. Yet, even though I haven't changed the firewall settings on the static IP machine the port forwarding isn't working.

My modem is a Vigor 2750 this is the VDSL only settings I used.

I tried factory resetting the 880L too.

Can you post a capture if what your using on the 880L now for Port Forwarding rules?
If your PFg, is uPnP enabled? Disable if it's enabled while using PF rules.

Did you reboot the modem and router after making the change to disable uPnP?

Disable the PF rules and set up these rules in Virtual Sever and see if that works...

Also and to verify, are you getting a public or private IP address on the router since you changed modes? Private is a 192.168.something and public is ##.##.###.###

I did a reboot, and setting up the ports in the virtual server (and deleting the PF ones) did nothing.

I'm going to double check my firewall to rule that out.

I'm getting an IP address from the ISP, yes. And the router is setting itself as 192.168.0.1.

Ok, may need to set up some Firewall rules. Just checking to make sure your getting a public IP address on the router, which is preferred.  ;) To check port status, you need to be actively using the ports before scanning port status.

Well I do get an IP... when I look it up it belongs to my ISP. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the rest. Yes I'm actively trying to connect back to that machine over the ports during testing.

Additionally, I contacted the VDSL modem manufacturer as I thought maybe their modem only instructions might have omitted inbound. But they tell me that it's all over to the 880L after I have done the linked config.

I'm using Comodo as the firewall on the fixed IP machine. But even when I disable the firewall nothing seems to get through.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Looks like there is no need. My new ISP flip.co.nz got back to me

Due to the world wide exhaustion of IPv4 addresses Flip has implemented a technology called “Carrier Grade Network Address Translation” (CGNAT).

While this technology is totally transparent to 99% of people, it does mean if you want to run a server at home and use a technique known as “Port Forwarding” or “Pin-holing” these services will not work. Most traditional reasons to use port forwarding (like accessing your files remotely) can actually be achieved in a more secure and robust fashion through the use of cloud services such as “Dropbox”.

CGNAT does have some cost and security advantages for end user however as it reduces unwanted traffic (and the associated data use) reaching your modem.

Cheers

Ah ha...was wondering about your ISP. Sorry about that.
Thanks for sharing this information. Hope the router continues to work well for you otherwise.

Good Luck on your endeavors.  ;)

Frustrating response from them. Telling me about how nobody else cares about a feature I have indicated I specifically require. As if that's supposed to make me feel better about pointlessly troubleshooting for two days, and signing up to a service that is wholly useless to me now. ;D

Any chance of using a different ISP service that allows features that you need?  ???

I'm looking now. But it will be more waiting and more install costs. Lucky I'm not on a contract with my current fizzer :)
