Switched to Charter cable but only getting the speeds when wired
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:43:07 AM »

If I connect directly to the modem or wired to the router, I get the 25Mbps I signed up for.

But I'm losing speed through the router (running wirelessly).  I get 10-18 down but up is good at 3mbps.

I'm running g/n mixed, WPA2 AES.
Channel is 20/40 Auto.

Anything else I should do?

Thats pretty good man. You'll prob never see the same speeds as wired over wireless. Many factors contribute to wireless not being the same as wired. Just nature of the beast. Your good man.

All you can do is make sure your drivers are up to date and try to keep radio interference to a minimum. Enjoy.

Oh is that right?

OK then, thanks Furry!

Edit to add, I have no idea how to update the modem firmware.  I don't even know the IP address to bring up the GUI (if it has one).  It's a Motorola SB6120.  Any thoughts on that?

Modem FW updates are handled at the ISP level. If your just getting your Modem on line with your ISP. Give it a week or so. I saw the same thing. Noticed one version the about a week later the FW was updated and the modem's RECEIVE light changed from GREEN to BLUE indicating that the modem was channel bonding with the ISP. Been running great still. You can look at the modem UI page and logs at 192.168.100.1 however.

What FW version is your 4500 on? You can update this on your own however it's recommended not too if it's working well at the moment. If it works, DON"T FIX IT!!!  ;)

Sweet, thanks for the modem UI page!

I just got this modem installed yesterday.  All lights are green except for the link which is blue and flashing.  Will it eventually turn green?

This is the firmware version for the modem: SB6120-1.0.2.4-SCM01-NOSH

I have the 1.23 firmware for the router and it's been working great so far!

Once the modem gets updated, the RECEIVE light will turn BLUE. Means it channel bonding.

Blinking Link light has been occuring since firmware 1.0.1.7 I think. I believe it has something to do with the modem responding to ARP traffic which it usually ignores. Its not performance effecting though. The general fix is good old fashion black electric tape. heh

As for the DS light not being blue, you might want to check with your ISP and see if your area is DOCSIS 3.0 capable yet. If its not, no amount of firmware will make that light blue. If it is, then yea, Furry is right.

OK, very good.

We are definitely DOCSIS 3.0 capable.  That was one of the first things that they told me when I was asking about the service.  It's been a big improvement over my 6mbps/768k DSL.

Well until that second light turns blue, your still on DOCSIS 2.0. If it doesn't update on its own soon, you may want to talk to a official engineer for your ISP on DSLReports. Just make sure your signal levels are within spec or the upgrade may cause some odd issues.

Well, it's still green.  The only blue one is the link one and it's flashing.

It takes a few days if not a week or two. Be patient.  ::)
