Persistent XBOX Live issue with DGL-4500
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:43:31 AM »

I've provisioned my router which is currently running Firmware verison 1.23NA, 2010/04/15 following the instructions in the sticky for XBOX Live 360.

With that said, I cannot seem to get my xbox to connect. Right now I've got things on the XBOX configured to fixed IP with that same IP reserved on the DGL-4500. The latest message of choice is an MTU error which quite unhelpfully advised me to change my settings (it's at 1500) right now.

I have a number of different devices on the network here and so I don't understand the interplay or even honestly where to begin.

Please help....

Make sure you set the xbox network settings for Automatic. Not manual. If you have set up static IP reservations on the 4500, then it will pass this address to the xbox. The xbox just needs to be set up for automatic networking and it will get the addressing information from the router.

When set to automatic it utterly fails....

First I set to factory defaults and cleared cache on XBOX.
Configure network and enter the correct WPA2 passphrase.
When on automatic the error I get is "can't obtain IP address from your router or modem".

Is this a wired or wireless connection to the xbox?  ???

Glad to give you remote access to my network via gotoassist or similar if you want to peruse the router settings. I'm completely mystified.

I would first wet the 4500 wife to single mode G with out any security to just test and see if you can get the xbox to connect. If you can then set up security for WPA2 and Cipher to auto. Make sure you have the reservation saved correctly and the MAC address matches the IP address for the wireless adaptor for the xbox. The MAC address will be different between the wireless adapter and the MAC address on the wired LAN connection on the xbox.

What Wireless adapter do you have for the xbox?
Will the xbox connect using the wired LAN cable?

May seem like an odd question, the adapter is the Wireless N Networking Adapter.
How should I determine the correct MAC address? The one I'm using I believe was located within advanced options.

I would clear out all of the Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients in Basic/Networking by revoking all entries on the router. Turn off all devices accept for your PC.

Then turn on the xbox and let it get to the dashboard.
Refresh the Networking browser window and you should see a new entry under Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients. This will be your xbox using the wireless. If you see this entry. Select the Reserve word option at the right in this row. This will auto-fill in the Add DHCP Reservation section. From here you can give it a name that you can easily ID it. You will see the IP address as well. Select Save.

You will have to re-edit the Gamefuel rule you set up to match the new IP address, if it changed. Very easy to just edit the rule and re-save the rule. You should be up and running.

I would try using N mode only a 2.4Ghz with out security to test. Then if you get connected, then set security. You can try N mode only at 5Ghz if your close to the router, say one wall away?

Make sure you disconnect the wired connection if you have it connected.

Alright, I've ensured that the reserved address is correct (no change btw so I was fine there).
I've furthermore modified my network to have no security (temporarily).

When I power cycle the xbox and attempt to connect to the network, I first managed to get to the third stage (internet - > xbl) but it failed saying live was not responding.

When I tried a second time it failed in the first stage.

When I look at the ip settings that were "automatically" assigned, they don't seem to relate to my network at all. IP: 169.254.186.52, subnet 255.255.0.0 and no gateway.

This is pretty much similar behavior that I was seeing with WPA 2 enabled as well in either mixed or N mode.

Randomly throughout my ordeal over the last few days I have managed to connect to XBL but not enough to sustain a power cycle.

What next?

Here's my latest update.... with the XBOX Wireless N adapter I seemed to be able to achieve a moderately stable configuration in a 802.11n 5ghz only mode with no security. If I attempted to switch to mixed moded of n & g, the whole thing collapsed.

However, that was going to be unsustainable as I have a number of wireless devices that cannot operate on N (my Canon MX870 printer).

What I then did was revert back to the earlier XBOX Wireless adapter (the B/G model) and set up a mixed n & g environment. Right now I seem to be able to maintain connectivity to XBL with the older adapter and WPA2 enabled.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Still no clue why this issue suddenly cropped up after things working quite nicely for several weeks with minimal configuration at all. Perhaps some XBL update?

Also very puzzled as to why the N style adapter won't play nice in the mixed mode or why one adapter works while another doesn't.

What is your ISP service? DSL or cable?
What make and model of modem do you have?
Did you get a CD with the Xbox wireless adapter and did you use it? I got one with mine last Dec. and followed the instructions.

Time Warner.
Attempted to use the CD but never seemed to make progress with it; i.e. the xbox did nothing with it when I inserted. Will play a game or two and try that.
Make model of modem is: DPC2100R2 Scientific American (they provided it).

Side question; will I be happier owning my own cable modem?

Ok, Cable is preferred as it is probably a stand alone modem. Newer modems have and are coming out with built in routers and cause connection issues unless the modems are bridged. You should be ok.

Yes, I love my new Motorola SB 6120 on DOCSIS 3. Works great with the 4500.

Well I would try the CD again. I not that it didn't seem to do anything however I presume it just installed drivers on mine then went back to the dashboard. You might have a defective adapter. If your other older G one is working and the new one isn't. Hmmm. Try the old one using single mode G at 2.4Ghz and let us know.
