DGS-1210-16 can't log in to web interface and DNS error
« on: March 19, 2016, 04:45:45 AM »

Hello all,

I have the DGS-1210-16 H/W rev A with latest firmware installed.

The switch has had this intermittent problem where it's fine for weeks and then suddenly I can't connect to the internet through it because it seems to stop any form of DNS lookup. I've never worked out the route cause of this issue and would be grateful for suggestions. I couldn't previously find anything in the settings that would suggest it would catch all DNS requests.

Anyway, the way to solve that was just to use the reset button on the front and it would go back to working for a few more weeks. I went away for a few days and powered everything off at home (including the switch). When I came back and powered it on, usual problem of DNS lookup failure, so I reset it, and then again and then many times when expletives were shouted.

I then tried to re-install the smartlink utility but now I can't, because it's digital certificate is out of date and windows 10 blocks any attempt to install. So I tried to log in to the management interface. I can connect to it on the default 10.90.90.90 but whenever I then type in the default password, it just throws an error saying the webpage returned no information. If you type the wrong password in, it says wrong password and goes back to the login page.

Any suggestions before i throw it in the nearest trash receptacle?

By way of an update, I've managed to install the smartlink software on a different machine and have managed to log-in to the web interface of the switch. I've also changed the IP of the switch to match the subnet all of my computers sit on. However, it still does not pass traffic through to the router. Web browsers always come back with a DNS lookup failure.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the switch will not direct traffic properly. Pretty much every feature is disabled (including dhcp).
Thanks in advance.

Has LAN cabling been swapped to check for bad cables?

If you can get into the switch and configure it, there maybe a configuration issue here. Check the user manual to see if there is any info on setting it up with a router. Some routers don't play well with smart switches.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the cabling but this didn't make any difference. I'll go read the manual as I think it might be a configuration issue as well, but I don't know what as there's nothing obvious. The switch has previously worked with the router just fine. Is there a particular setting for telling it what DNS to pass requests through to or the IP of the router?

Thanks

What is the Mfr and model # of the router?

What changed if it worked with the router previously?
Try using the routers IP address for DNS on the switch to see. Try using ISP DNS as well.

Hi,

It's an ISP supplied router which is a combined VDSL 2 modem and gigabit router.

I'm not sure what changed. I haven't changed anything in the settings. It just stops working and I get a DNS lookup failure from my computer and it can't see the other computers on the network either, so it's not a gateway issue.

I've scoured the manual and most of it is beyond me (or the features I need) but I can't see anything obvious. It used to be that I could reset the switch and it would work again, but now even that's not working.

Where do I set the DNS on the switch? I've already set the gateway IP to be the routers IP.

Another interesting annoyance, I can access the router config screen from windows 7 chrome and IE, but not from any browser in windows 10, it half shows the login screen without pictures and then when you type the password in you just get 'the page isn't working' 'it didn't send any data' 'ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE' which is annoying and means I have to use an old computer for all this.

Help gratefully received.

Try IE11 in Windows 10 in compatibility mode and see if you can access the UI. Try FF as well.

Not sure if the DGS would be supporting of Windows 10 browsers...You may need to phone contact D-Link support and ask.

Seems like the DGS needs to be reset fully if you can then setup again from scratch.

I got a 'This page cannot be displayed' by IE 11 in compatibility mode in W10. Bizarre.

Will D-link support take the call if I'm out of warranty?

How do I reset the DGS fully? I've held the reset button down on the front for over 5 seconds many times. Should I downgrade the firmware and then upgrade again?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I presume you can ping the DGS's IP address?

I presume they may not...

You might do a factory reset if you can, use FF or IE in Winodws 7 to re-apply the current or older FW. Factory reset then see if you can access in 7 first then try 10.

Let's take a step and half back from the switch for a second.

Do you get DHCP connected directly to the router?
Can you ping the router connected directly to the router?
Can you ping the switch connected directly to the router?
Can you ping 8.8.8.8 connected directly to the router?
Can you nslookup google.com connected directly to the router?
Can you get online connected directly to the router?

Now let's compare that to the switch...

Do you get DHCP connected directly to the switch?
Can you ping the router connected directly to the switch?
Can you ping the switch connected directly to the switch?
Can you ping 8.8.8.8 connected directly to the switch?
Can you nslookup google.com connected directly to the switch?
Can you get online connected directly to the switch?

If we are working with a switch at defaults (which it sounds like we are) then it doesn't actually do a whole lot (switches frames, that's about it), so there is comparatively little that can go wrong...

Haven't had a chance to re-install the firmware and start again because....

For some mystical reason, the damn thing has started working again.

I did another reset (because I was trying something to do with mac addresses and uplink ports in the manual and locked myself out) and after setting the IP and gateway, it started working. This is great but really frustrating as i'd reset it already so many times so why did it work this time...I don't know.

Anyway, it's going to carry on with this intermittent problem where it suddenly drops the ability to pass packets. I also still can't access the web interface from windows 10 but I can do basic telnet with it (to reset for example) without having to fire up an old windows 7 machine.

To answer Rara Avis:
Yes, DHCP is enabled on the router but all my machines use a static IP because i use port forwarding on the router to access them for particular traffic types.
Yes I can ping the router when directly connected to it (all the wireless devices in the house keep working, only those that go through this switch lose network access.
No I can't ping the switch when directly connected to the router, I get 100% failure rate.
Yes I can ping the google public DNS when connected to the router
Yes NSlookup works when connected directly to the router
Yes I can get online directly connected to the router

No to all the above, I can't ping or see anything, I just get lost packets.

Off on hols for two weeks but not going to turn the switch off this time (which is when it completely stopped working even when reset). Will report back if it's still up and stable on return or if it's stopped working (it doesn't usually last two weeks without needing a reset when dealing with this intermittent problem).

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Well, the switch was fine while I was away for a fortnight, then a few days after i got back, same thing happened. I got the same DNS request failure and was unable to see other computers on the network or access the internet.

I connected by telnet (as it still won't present the web interface on any windows 10 machine I have) and did a reboot, after which it worked again as has been for the last week.

It's a really weird intermittent bug. It doesn't exactly cause me much trouble but it's annoying that I can't work out what's causing it. There's no change in settings, something in the firmware is obviously just getting itself in a knot after a while and refusing to serve requests. Not sure I'll ever get to the bottom of it but at least I now have a quick and easy way of solving it.

So was the switch doing any traffic handling while you were away?
Seems odd that nothing happened while you were away then when your back, it failed. Possible something happening.
Is the switch overly hot to the touch? Any differences in temp when it's being used vs idle?

You might want to contact D-Link support on the phone and get some help on this...
