Do I need to upgrade to a newer model D-Link DSL 2750-u
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:20:37 AM »

Hi D-Link gang only a few times here before with either issues or stuff I found. In reading last night found that I may need a newer model. Currently using  DLink DSL-2750-U  802.11n since about 2011. I am in Pattaya Beach, Thailand and the only ISP is 3BB unless you have  a satellite or cable package. Service has been intermittent at best when we lived in a condo on the beach. However now we are in a private housing development, so I would think more stable connection.

I pay for 13 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speed. I find myself powering it on, and off several times a day to get that speed. I can't be sure if it's heavy traffic during peak times or if the modem's age. Have had tech's here to check but they always find my supposed speed, but never here during peak traffic times.

What made me think is I read the latest is 802.11A/C, so is it time for a new one? And will all my 802.11n devices still work?

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the modems web page under status.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Hi FurryNutz, I'm using Firmware Version TH_1.03 particular to Thailand. Phone outlet is across the room, regular 4 wire, in a cable run along  with HDMI cable I use for watching downloaded movies & TV dual monitor mode.  Modem sits on my P.C. desk  next to the monitor, ethernet cable 1 meter to the PC, so I think not much chance of interference.

Ok so I'll have my ISP check it out again from the outlet, to the modem, to my PC and laptop which is also connect ethernet port 2.

So I'll be back to let those interested know what I find.

Thanks for the info.

Hi FurryNutz, and the D-Link forum, called my IPS, operator said she reset something, asked how many devices I have which are two PC's ethernet connected, a tablet, & 3 phones. Also that my computer had been on-line 19 hrs. yesterday, which is about right, it's usually on ( one or the other) from the time I wake up until I go to bed. She also said Tech's in the field would be checking and would call.

Since 9:00 AM to now 14:35 have maintained my speed. But if anything like before, I"ll maintain my speed for 2-3 wks.

So I guess this will be the protocol, when it slows call my IPS.

Glad to know I won't need another modem for the time being, I had a friend set this one up, and have no clue on doing it myself for optimum performance.

Just wondering what is it's life expectancy?

Can run thru this and try some setting for WiFi:
Router Troubleshooting Suggestions and Tips

Modems and routers should last a long time HW wise unless they are under bad heat conditions. Why they need good ventilation or sometimes I like to use a laptop cooler under my router.

Hi FurryNutz, Thanks for the tip though i'm careful about noticing  any heat generating electronics especially in the tropics. When looking at the D-link site noticed some of the same models shipped with a vertical stand, however mine was not one, so it sits flat on my desk. Nothing blocking the vents. Made sure when I had my PC built it had more than adequate ventilation with 4 case fans, besides pwr supply fan.  Just tonight a buddy was telling me he powers off his modem when done for the day, which I'm  considering  doing also.

Mine usually only get power off only when my PC has to go to the shop, maybe a good idea to give it a rest over night.

Thank again

I have one, mostly never used an idea for tomorrow, though my desk space is getting critical. Can I use the modem USB port for power to it? as it has a very short cable.

Thanks again

I presume with in reason. Power is limited on the USB port. So anything needed more power beyond USB limits would not be good. LT cooler fan is good.

OK, gotcha, incidentally speed still holding at approx. 13.5  Mbps and 1.1 Mbps. I figure 2-3 wks before it drops again, but could change as i'm shutting down at night.
